Ronald Knox is governed by a volunteer board of parents who have children enrolled in the school. In addition, we highly depend on all of our parents to be committed and involved by contributing volunteer time, talent and/or financial resources. There are several events throughout the year that require co-chairs to lead in the planning and coordination, however each event does have a committee with more parent volunteers to help the designated co-chairs in either the planning process or day of responsibilities.
Opportunities for Classroom Involvement
Parents have several opportunities to be involved in their child's classroom experience throughout the year. Parents are invited to visit the classroom on their child's birthday, and bring along photos of each year of their child's life as well as a snack to share with their classmates. Other opportunities include sending in flowers for flower-arranging and fresh fruits or vegetables for food preparation by the children. Two times per year, parents are also invited for Parent's Day. This gives children a unique opportunity to share the RKMS experience. Sitting side by side their parents, the children do their works and offer insight on a typical day at school. Additionally, two classroom observations - one through a one-way mirror and the other inside the classroom - round out the array of parental classroom experiences.
Volunteer Opportunities: Each classroom has at least one room parent. Their main role is to coordinate parental activity in the classroom. At the beginning of the school year, room parents coordinate the classroom calendars. They help with classroom communication throughout the year by sending monthly reminders and/or messages from the directresses. They are also instrumental in organizing the class potluck dinners that occur in the second half of the year and any other class get-togethers.
New Family Mentor Program
Volunteer Opportunities: A chairperson works with the school administration to pair new families with returning volunteer families. This is a great way to welcome new families to our school community. To help in facilitating connections and ongoing relationships, the school tries to match families up who might have a similar schedule, live in the same neighborhood, or have children of the same age. They also co-chair the Fall Parent Social with the Fall Parent Social co-chair and send reminders to the mentors throughout the year.
Annual Pumpkin Run
The Pumpkin Run is a newer tradition at RKMS. The event takes place during October at a local park, and allows families an opportunity to socialize and have fun together while enjoying the beautiful Fall weather. Activities include races, games, and arts & crafts for the children as well as snacks and refreshments for the whole family.
Volunteer Opportunities: Co-chairs secure a local venue for the event, plan the activities and refreshments, and publicize the event within the Ronald Knox Community.
Fall Parent Social
This popular Ronald Knox event takes place each Fall, giving parents an opportunity to meet new parents and visit with old friends. The event takes place in the lovely home of one of our families.
Volunteer Opportunities: A volunteer co-chairs the event with the New Family Mentor Program co-chair. They coordinate logistics, which include identifying a host family and sending out invitations to the Ronald Knox community. They also coordinate food and beverages as well as help set-up before and clean-up after the event.
Sharing With the Sisters
This much-loved event gives the third-year children and their parents the opportunity to interact with and say "thank you" to the Sisters of Christian Charity, who have supported our school since its inception. The retired Sisters reside at the Sacred Heart Convent, just a short walk from our school. The school's music teacher prepares a delightful program of holiday musical entertainment by the children.
Volunteer Opportunities: Co-chairs publicize the event, coordinate the collection of donations from families to fill goodie bags for the Sisters, and provide snacks and refreshments.
This event is one of the highlights of the year for Ronald Knox families. Parents (grandparents too!) and children gather in holiday attire to share in the spirit of the holiday season. Families are treated to a musical performance by the children enrolled in the Primary program, and the children enjoy the chance to visit with Santa. Children are also given an opportunity to cultivate generosity and compassion by donating a new or gently used toy for our annual Toy Drive at the event. The toys are then donated to the children at the Lloyd Barbee Montessori School, our “sister school”, which is part of the Milwaukee Public School System.
Volunteer Opportunities: The chair for this event works closely with the Admissions/Program Director and helps coordinate the logistics of the event, Another parent volunteer coordinates the toy collection the day of the event for the Toy Drive, and delivery of the toys to the school.
Annual Benefit “Knox Night”
This is a fun night to spend with friends and raise funds to support and enhance the educational resources of our beautiful school and additional training of our amazing faculty. The evening generally consists of food, a live band, and an auction.
Volunteer Opportunities: Two co-chairs and several committees plan every detail of the event from logistics, securing a location/band/caterer to working on gaining commitments of items for the auction.
Teacher appreciation week takes place during the last month of school each year, and gives our families a chance to thank our wonderful Directresses and Assistants for all they do for our children. Different events take place each day of the week, including special meals and flowers.
Volunteer Opportunities: Two co-chairs coordinate the activities for the week, including purchasing food and setting up for a special faculty luncheon.
All School Family Picnic
Ronald Knox parents and children gather for an afternoon of fun activities to celebrate the end of another successful year. Families can share a picnic, parents get a chance to socialize with other parents, and children enjoy activities and playing with their friends.
Volunteer Opportunities: Co-chairs publicize the event and organize the activities for the children. They secure an outdoor location (the park behind the school), as well as an alternate indoor location in the event of rain.
Volunteer Opportunities: This parent volunteer coordinates light refreshments for various RKMS events that take place at the school throughout the year. In addition, the chair coordinates breakfast food items needed for the teachers for Faculty Institute Days.
